Green Team at CVMC

CVMC’s ‘Green Team’

For several years, the Green Team has led efforts to facilitate the organization’s move toward adopting environmentally friendly ways. Membership of the team consists of individuals of a myriad of department such as Plant Operations, Facilities Management, Environmental Services, Materials Management, Physical Therapy, Nutrition Care, Fitness Plus, and Infection Prevention well as Nursing. Representation from nursing included nurses and nurse aids from the Operating Room, Critical Care Unit, Telemetry, Emergency Department, Infection Prevention, Secure Care, and the Center for Women’s & Children’s Services.

During 2010, the Green Team has been involved in numerous initiative and activities. The year began with preparations for the 2010 Earth Day at Catawba Science Center in Hickory, NC. Earth day was originally intended to create and inspire awareness as well as appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment. Today, Earth Day is celebrated in more than 175 countries annually in April. In 2009, the United Nations designated April 22nd ‘International Mother Earth Day’. During Earth day at the SALT Block on April 17th, 2010, CVMC was one of the organizations to display unique ways and contributions to saving resources, reclaiming used products and reducing waste.

Another effort initiated by the Green Team is the ‘Adopt a Highway’ program. CVMC has adopted Fairgrove Church Road starting at the interaction of Highway 70 to Highland Avenue. The first litter sweep on this 1.7 miles stretch of road leading to CVMC occurred on November 20th, 2010 and will continue on a consistent basis. Recyclable items are taken to the recycle center whereas the remaining trash is picked up by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Additionally, the Green Team in conjunction with a medical waste disposal company conducted a house-wide evaluation of recycling efforts which led to the following recommendation:

  • Implementation of a Pharmaceutical Waste Management Program
  • Work with the local recycler to dispose of items such as soda cans, plastic bottles, and Styrofoam cups.

The Green Team’s Goals for 2011 are:

  • Implement a recycling program for cans and bottles and to replace and/or reduce styrofoam dinnerware (evaluate alternatives such as reusable mugs; replace styrofoam with biodegradable styrofoam or paper).
