Coming Soon...CVMC's Got Talent!!!

altThe Research and Evidence-Based Practice Council announces the return of a popular event, the 2010 Research Theatre.  A take off from the popular TV show, America's Got Talent, this adaptation will feature the research talent of CVMC nurses.  Our emcee and panel of judges will certainly add color and commentary to this year's theatre - an event that is always intellectually stimulating and enjoyable.  The objective of the research theatre is to demonstrate the steps of the research process.  It is a venue for showcasing the research being conducted at CVMC.

The Dinner Theatre is scheduled for Tuesday, September 7th from 5:00 – 6:30 pm.  The Morning Theatre will be held on Wednesday, September 8th from 7:30 – 9:00 am. Both events will occur in AHEC 112.  The first 30 minutes of each theatre have been set aside to allow participants to eat while being entertained by certain of your CVMC co-workers (5:00-5:30 pm and 7:30-8:00 am).  The buffet will be set in AHEC 110.

The annual research theatre is an opportunity for you to learn more about current research projects being conducted by CVMC nurses at the point-of-care.  Julie Carrigan, BSN, RN, CEN, from the Emergency Department nursing research team, will present the final results of the ED's temporal artery and rectal temperature comparison study.  The Aromatherapy research team, comprised of Day Surgery Nurses, CRNAs and PACU nurses, is investigating peppermint aromatherapy to alleviate post-operative nausea and vomiting.  Debra Sites, MHA, RN will give a presentation of this study, which is currently in the data collection phase of the research process.  The research study under development in the Birthing Center will be presented by Stephanie Gilliam, BSN, RN.  This nursing research team will address coping with pain in the laboring woman.  Research presentations will begin promptly at 5:30pm and 8:00 am.  Be sure to visit the Research and EBP Walk-Through in AHEC 105 before or after the theatre.

altRegistration is required, as seating is limited, and can be completed through HealthStream. The last date to register is September 1st, 2010.  Note: 1 contact hour will be provided for this fun educational activity.   §

Cheryl Goossens, BS, RNC

Birthing Center

Launching her nursing career as a LPN in 1977 becoming a registered nurse in 1986 after completing her Associate Degree, Cheryl continued her education and earned a BSN in 2008.  She initially joined the staff at CVMC in 1997 stating, “I felt CVMC was more progressive and patient-focused than other institutions in the area.  I was also impressed with the midwives, doctors, and nursing practice at CVMC.”

While practicing in Tarboro NC, Cheryl recognized an opportunity to change and improve nursing practice for laboring patients.  She helped implement the practice of removing normal, healthy laboring patients from continuous monitoring, and encouraging moms to ambulate, move about, and let labor progress naturally.

Returning to CVMC as a full-time staff nurse on the Birthing Center (BC) in 2007,  Cheryl served as administrator for the BC electronic charting system, OB Trace Vue, and as resource coordinator prior to becoming nurse manager for the Birthing Center in July of this year.

Cheryl has been involved in several BC practice changes.  She participated on a TAG that addressed care plans and order sets for triage patients.  Currently, she is involved in developing a study, which focuses on assessing the effectiveness of the Coping with Labor Algorithm©.  The Birthing Center Nursing Research Team’s study will compare standard pain scale assessment to this pain assessment designed specifically for the laboring patient.  Their research will ascertain whether or not the patient is coping with labor by asking the patient and by recognizing nonverbal cues.  The proposed study will be submitted to the Catawba Valley Institutional Review Board in the near future.

Married with five children, Cheryl has a new grandson and 2 dogs.  She works full time, and is enrolled in a Masters Degree program at Mountain State University.  Her degree will be in Strategic Leadership with a health care emphasis, and she plans to graduate in October 2011.  Cheryl occasionally still manages to sew and do scrap booking in her leisure time.  §
