May 2009

altAnnual EBP Week.  During the week of 27 April to 01 May 2009, the Research & EBP Council sponsored a variety of evidence-based practice activities during the first CVMC EBP Week. Staff could learn something about evidence-based practice or demonstrate their EBP knowledge playing ‘spin the wheel’ in the cafeteria and on floor rounds. Belinda Davis, MSN, RN (left) and Nicolae Turcanu, BSN, RN (right) of Critical Care night shift are pictured.

Educational courses were offered in the basic EBP process, ‘Let’s Get Cooking with EBP,’ and in two advanced topics – ‘Searching the Literature’ and Appraising the Literature.’ Eight classes were offered with a total of 44 participants. These nurses took advantage of EBP week education to meet or excel in job-specific performance expectations research and/or EBP.

Lenoir-Rhyne University senior nursing students presented their practicum quality improvement projects, while Betty Easter, RN, CPAN and Kimberly Yates, MSN/MHA, RN-BC presented research conducted here at the Medical Center. Attendees at the poster session also received an EBP “Survival” Kit after participating in the facial tissue “research study.” This study, which continued on Friday in the cafeteria, was designed to be fun and to generate interest in research at CVMC. Volunteers felt three unknown varieties of facial tissues and voted for the brand they preferred. The comparison was designed as a double blind study, i.e., neither researchers (Council members) nor study volunteers knew which brand of tissues was in each bin. Double blind research studies are superior to non-blinded studies because blinding reduces bias.

Over one hundred CVMC employees participated. Brand 3, Puffs, was preferred by 63.7% of the volunteers (79/124), while 29% chose Kleenex (Brand 2) as their favorite. Only 9 of 124 (7.3%) participants selected Brand 1, Great Value, and the Wal-Mart house brand. Hospital staff demonstrated a preference ratio of greater than 2:1 for Puffs over Kleenex. The cost in cents per tissue: Puffs- 0.917, Kleenex- 0.882 and Great Value- 0.809. Thanks to all who participated in the facial tissue “research study.” Through this fun activity, the importance of blinding in conducting and evaluating research was demonstrated.  §

Clinical expertise is one of the three components of evidence-based practice.  Furthering one’s professional training enhances their clinical expertise.  We tip our hats to staff earning degrees and speciality certifications.

Chapman Recognized.  Stephanie Chapman, MSN, RN-BC, Director of the Critical Care Center/Medical Unit received the "Clinical Partner Award" from Catawba Valley Community College this month.  Congratulations, Stephanie. §

altCommunity Spelling Bee.  CVMC's Team recaptured the 2009 title in the Newton-Conover Education Foundation "Red Hot Spelling Bee."  The Medical Center won the inaugural contest two years ago.  However, CVMC came in 2nd last year to the team from the Observer News Enterprise.  This year's title was won by correctly spelling "lachrymose."  Other words the CVMC's team spelled correctly were: abominable, dirigible, ratatouille, sarcophagus, rapprochement, saskatoon, lackadaisical and fiduciary.  Thanks for participating in this community endeavor and kudos to all team members (left to right):  Nancy Toy MD, Patty Tucker MSN, RN-BC, Eddie Beard MSN, RN, NEA-BC and Kimberly Yates MSN/MHA, RN-BC. §

EBP Logo Contest.  With the assistance of CVMC's graphic specialist, Elizabeth Putnam, the Research & EBP Council has chosen five logos as finalists from the entries submitted.  CVMC staff will be given the opportunity to "vote" for the design they like best in the near future. §

Lou Turnipseed, BSN, RN, CRRN
Critical Care Center

“I have been interested in Evidence-Based Practice since before I came here.  We were doing EBP at my former institution for 3 or 4 years,”  Lou reports.  Several EBP initiatives were launched during that time.

Lou’s involvement in Research & Evidence-Based Practice at CVMC began with her asking a clinical question about an accepted practice within the Critical Care Center (CCC).  At that time, Lou was guided by a fellow employee to explore an EBP approach for answering her question.

Lou Turnipseed has served as a member on the Research & Evidence-Based Practice Council since Fall 2008.  She was recently promoted to CCC Patient Care Coordinator.  Lou graduated from nursing school in 1974 with a BS in Biology and Nursing, and has since worked in critical care.  She earned her CCRN in1990.

Other accomplishments include Lou's involvement in opening short stay units in the at her former workplace.  Currently, she is an active instructor for BLS, ACLS, PALS, and TNCC courses at Catawba Valley Medical Center.
