Clinical expertise, one component of evidence-based practice, is enhanced when a nurse earns an advanced degree and/or speciality certification.  We tip our hats to these individuals recently furthering their professional training.

Lisa Wike, MSN, RN-BC

Medical Surgical Practice Improvement Director

"Since beginning my nursing career 23 years ago, I have seen many changes in the field of nursing.  Today, nurses are empowered to make clinical decisions regarding their practice because of evidence-based practice and research.  Through EBP, nurses have specific guidelines for best practice."

"It wasn’t until I began working on a research project for graduate school that I started to recognize the influence it could have on optimal patient care.  In addition, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work on a project that would benefit our patients here at CVMC.  With the implementation of a Rapid Response Team, better known at CVMC as “ Code Purple,” I was able to research the effect it could have on decreasing the incidence of code blue events outside of intensive care areas.  Currently, I am continuing the study of Rapid Response to determine its effect on mortality and nursing efficacy.  Being able to go through the steps of research firsthand has provided me with a much greater comprehension of the process."

"During my 19 years as a CVMC employee, I have served as a staff nurse, charge nurse and clinical development coordinator.  As the Practice Improvement Director for Medical-Surgical Services, one of my goals is to engage more staff nurses in evidence-based nursing practice and research.  One way to achieve this goal is by facilitating the Med-Surg EBP Journal Club.  I am also a member of the Research and Evidence-Based Practice Council.  It is exciting to serve on a committee with peers who share the same enthusiasm with research and EBP as yourself."

"All nurses at CVMC have ample opportunity to be involved in EBP initiatives, research studies, and PI projects in their areas of expertise.  This is how individual nurses can play active roles in establishing patient care interventions based on best evidence."  §
